Description Hide Show “Out of This World” is the fourth studio album by the Swedish rock band Europe, released on August 5, 1988. Following the massive success of their previous album, “The Final Countdown,” Europe faced the challenge of living up to the high expectations set by their breakthrough record. “Out of This World” showcases the band’s signature blend of melodic rock and hard rock, with a polished production that was characteristic of the late 1980s rock scene. The album was produced by Ron Nevison, a renowned producer who had worked with artists such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Heart. His influence is evident in the album’s slick production and radio-friendly sound. “Out of This World” features a lineup consisting of Joey Tempest on lead vocals, John Norum’s replacement Kee Marcello on guitars, John Levn on bass, Mic Michaeli on keyboards, and Ian Haugland on drums. One of the standout tracks on the album is “Superstitious,” which was also the lead single. The song is a quintessential Europe track, featuring a catchy chorus, powerful vocals from Tempest, and a memorable guitar solo by Marcello. “Superstitious” achieved moderate success, reaching number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States and becoming a fan favorite. Another notable track is “Open Your Heart,” a re-recording of a song from their 1984 album “Wings of Tomorrow.” The new version features a more polished arrangement and showcases the band’s growth in musicianship and production quality. The song’s heartfelt lyrics and melodic hooks make it one of the highlights of the album. “Let the Good Times Rock” is an upbeat, feel-good anthem that captures the spirit of the 1980s rock scene. With its infectious energy and sing-along chorus, the track exemplifies the band’s ability to create radio-friendly rock songs that resonate with a wide audience. “More Than Meets the Eye” and “Sign of the Times” are other tracks that highlight the band’s knack for crafting melodic rock songs with strong hooks and memorable melodies. Kee Marcello’s guitar work is a significant asset to the album, bringing a fresh dynamic to the band’s sound following John Norum’s departure. Despite its strengths, “Out of This World” did not achieve the same level of commercial success as “The Final Countdown.” The album peaked at number 19 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and received mixed reviews from critics. Some praised the band’s musicianship and the album’s production, while others felt it lacked the standout hits that characterized their previous effort. In retrospect, “Out of This World” is often seen as an underrated gem in Europe’s discography. It captures the band at a transitional moment, balancing their hard rock roots with a more polished, radio-friendly sound. The album’s production, musicianship, and songwriting are all strong, even if it didn’t produce a hit on the scale of “The Final Countdown.” For fans of melodic rock and 1980s rock music, “Out of This World” offers a collection of well-crafted songs that showcase Europe’s talents. While it may not have reached the same heights as its predecessor, it remains a solid and enjoyable album that deserves recognition for its contributions to the genre.
