All the pieces came together on Mercyful Fates second album, and a timeless pillar of metal was born. Dont Break the Oath is a delightfully eccentric collection of NWOBHM epics that are soaked to the bone in vocalist King Diamonds dramatic flair from his over-the-top lyrical odes to Satan to his singular, operatic trill. Musically, the album is proggier and more instrumentally adventurous than their obvious forefathers, and its gorgeously terrifying cover art was meant to be displayed on vinyl-sized cardboard.
